John Adams and Toby Poser recently completed their 3rd feature film and I was fortunate enough to be an assistant director and camera operator while we shot some complex scenes in the Joshua Tree National Park. It was an amazing 2 weeks! Before heading to the desert the first few days were spent shooting interiors for the “photography studio” scenes.
After that it was out to the desert where John had meticulously planned out some complex action sequences. I had originally thought the desert would be like a Loony-Tunes episode but was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful landscapes, exotic plant life and stunning sunsets. The “Joshua trees” looked like something out of a Dr. Sues book. We would climb giant rock installations where from the top all you could see was desert in all directions.
Generally shooting sun up to sun down - we’d then head back to our hotel to clean up, log footage and have large family style dinners with all the cast and crew. Nothing but great vibes!
Being an honorary “Adams Family Member” running around the desert and making some kick ass art was a blast. John and Toby’s first two films (Rumblestrips and Knuckle Jack) tore up the festival circuit and The Shoot is off to great start as well, having won the prestigious Gold Award at the California Film Awards.
